Sailor Brown Slips Away

Sailor Brown Slips Away

The Former Players Association are very sad to announce that 'Sailor Brown' passed away on the morning of Saturday 27 December 2008, and would like to extend their sincere condolences to his family.

Born in Great Yarmouth on 7 November 1915, Robert Albert John Brown played a total of 60 games for Charlton Athletic, scoring 24 goals.  He made his senior debut versus Birmingham City at The Valley on 29 January 1938.  His final match for the Addicks was the FA Cup Final versus Derby County at Wembley on 27 April 1946.

Originally nicknamed 'Popeye' and later 'Sailor' because of his rolling gait, even though he actually served as a sergeant in the RAF, Brown was a player of exceptional ability.  He was one of the legends of those great Charlton days of long, long ago and fully deserved his star treatment on his return visits to the club.
